Facebook is trying to make “poking” happen again.With new ads and more prominent features, Facebook is clearly trying to make the feature (which actually never went away) relevant for a new gen. Millennials will remember poking as a vague social tool that could be flirty or annoying. But Facebook is banking on it becoming something like a Snapchat or TikTok Streaks, especially by creating a page tracking their pokes. (If you don’t know, “streaks” number the days in a row users message each other without missing.) Part of the comeback is capitalizing on nostalgia for earlier iterations of social media that Gen Z views as less performative and more connecting, and Facebook already saw pokes used 13x more last year.
