After much backlash, Meta is updating its teen safety protocols. Between headlines of young people starting relationships with their AI chatbot to experts concerned over kids directly interacting with AI, many are calling for improved safeguards on the tech. As a result, Meta is implementing new safety changes to “ensure the company’s chatbots don’t cause additional harm to teen users.” The company will now restrict teens to a limited set of AI characters designed to “promote education and creativity” while blocking discussions around self-harm, eating disorders, or romantic relationships. Meta has also begun removing certain chatbot avatars, including those based on celebrities, that were found to engage in flirty or inappropriate behavior, and is preventing teen accounts from accessing characters that could be misused or generate harmful content.
