Japanese Monchhichi’s are joining the league of viral plushie bag charms. Following in the footsteps of Labubus and Sonny Angels before them, the Japanese toys of a stuffed monkey with a child’s face have become another whimsical fashion accessory. Influencers and celebrities are popularizing the hunt for these keychain toys, posting videos finding them on trips to Japan and styling them on their purses. Monchhichi is not a new name in the U.S. toy market, having had waves of popularity in the company’s century-long life, but they’re booming this year. At the end of their fiscal year in February 2025, the brand logged $31M in sales, and around 40% of buyers were international rather than domestic, selling at retailers like Urban Outfitters and Barnes & Noble.
