Open AI will launch a version of ChatGPT for college students called Study Mode. In an effort to incorporate AI into more classrooms, Study Mode will “act less like a lookup tool and more like a friendly, always-available tutor.” Open AI wants educators to see the new tool as supportive too, rather than a way for students to cheat on assignments as it collaborates with the user to work toward the answer together. Study Mode was built after collaborating with pedagogy experts from over 40 different educational institutions, and the college students who participated in its testing cohort said, “it did a good job of checking their understanding and adapting to their pace.” Open AI says its ultimate goal is helping underprivileged students gain access to high-quality education without the high cost of IRL tutors. And with YPulse data showing the number one thing college students have used AI for is schoolwork, Study Mode could resonate with students looking for an AI tool made for learning beyond giving answers away.
