Speaking of college life, the social culture of it could be changing.

Apr 02 2025

Speaking of college life, the social culture of it could be changing. Trump’s latest moves against universities aren’t just creating funding cuts, they could change the entire college experience. Since January, his administration has frozen or slashed billions in federal grants—Columbia University alone lost $400M over campus protestsforcing schools to lay off workers and cut programs. Even in anticipation, schools might respond by raising tuition, cutting humanities programs to make up for STEM budgets, or shifting to more online courses, making the traditional campus experience an exclusive privilege for wealthy students. And with financial aid programs at risk, fewer low and middle income students may be able to afford college at all. Young people have already been rethinking higher education in some ways—but further changes to the freedoms of campus life, whether the political atmosphere or simply going to class in person, could push this trend to a new level.
