Beta blockers are young people’s latest anxiety hack. Originally designed for treating heart conditions by blocking adrenaline in the body, they’re now being used to keep anxiety’s physical symptoms—like a racing heart and shaky hands—in check. (Especially when it comes to situations young people see as nerve-wracking, like public speaking or job interviews.) Since beta blockers don’t alter moods like traditional anti-anxiety meds, they’ve become popularly recommended on social media as a quick-fix for short-term relief. Even young celebs are speaking publicly about using them—Rachell Sennot told an Oscars red carpet host last week she tells herself to “take that beta blocker, girl,” before events. But while beta blockers can help in the moment, experts warn they don’t treat the root causes of anxiety as more slow-release medications might. (Glamour)
