An increasing number of young Germans are turning to the far-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). German elections are happening on Sunday, and there’s an evident rise in popularity of the AfD, a conservative right-wing party which holds strong views on immigration in the country. AfD is increasingly appealing to young Germans, too: the number of 18-24-year-olds who voted for the AfD has risen to 16% already, +11pts more than in 2019. Part of the reason behind this success is that AfD is more active on TikTok than its opponents; it has over 539K followers on TikTok, compared to 158K for SPD, the party currently holding a majority of seats in the German Parliament. Germany isn’t the only country in Europe where young people are increasingly gravitating towards populist right-wing parties, though—France’s National Rally is also an example of such trend. (BBC)
