The men’s basketball team at Dartmouth College have become the first college athletes to join a labor union. The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the election, ending in a final vote of 13 to 2 allowing them to join the service employees union—SEIU Local 560. But the student athletes still have some obstacles to overcome as the NLRB is trying to classify the players of the team as “employees of the school.” The vote still is, however, a major win for the college sports landscape, as there have been increasing calls for athletes to be given better financial compensation and to be acknowledged as valued members of their team.
