Young women on TikTok are training artificial intelligence chatbots through data annotation as their side hustle.

Jan 09 2024

Young women on TikTok are training artificial intelligence chatbots through data annotation as their side hustle. Tech companies have increasingly relied on data annotation, a job that involves rating and describing AI inputs and outputs, to improve their chatbot algorithms. Traditionally, this work was outsourced overseas, but recently it has reached a different demographic: young, online, mainly female users. (Known as the “girlies” thanks to 2023 trends.) TikTokers like Jackie Mitchell, who has millions of views on videos about data annotation, have been using this side hustle to engage in remote gig work and earn extra money—and are now promoting it to huge audiences, who are mainly made of other young women. YPulse data shows young people are always looking for ways to increase their income—whether through job hopping for better salaries or picking up a side hustle, a third have a second stream of income.
