Millennials are being priced out of the cities they built their lives in. Rising housing costs and mortgage rates during the pandemic drove Millennials to seek more affordable housing options and larger homes in suburban areas. And the suburbs were nice for a bit, but now they’re missing the walkability and density of activities in urban areas. But, property is once again too expensive to move to even within the vicinity of their old cities. And now, the shift back to hybrid and in-office work among major companies is forcing young people who moved while working remotely to make a long commute. YPulse’s Auto report revealed young people think owning a car is more necessary than ever, and a commute from the ‘burbs certainly doesn’t help. However, some experts predict that Millennials have the potential to reshape suburban sprawls just as they “youthified” cities by creating town-like communities that foster a greater sense of connection through the inclusion of more third places.
