There is a growing trend of TikTok users watching pirated movies split up by hundreds of separate clips. While the accounts that post these snippets are technically violating copyright laws, they are still a hit on the social media platform. Movies like Barbie are available in full-length on accounts who post them clip by clip and amass hundreds of thousands of likes, comments, and views, but they remain somewhat incognito by posting videos with “a cryptic title like Part 8” so the movie clips aren’t easily traceable by the actual title. One TikTok user admits to watching these videos, saying “I don’t turn the TV on as much as I used to, because everything is in the palm of my hand.” YPulse research shows that Gen Z’s attention is more fragmented than ever amongst video platforms, causing divides between the amount of time they spend watching socials versus traditional streaming.
