Meta is now adding avatars to its metaverse catalog on Instagram and Facebook Messenger. On Tuesday, the parent company of the social media platforms expanded their avatar options by adding a feature where users can use their Meta character avatar on video calls through both Instagram and Messenger. The metaverse technology tracks the movement of users’ facial movements, so it can engage with the user as they move on a call. Additionally, Meta will incorporate animated avatar stickers to Instagram / Facebook Stories and Reels, as well as Facebook comments, and direct message threads on Messenger and Instagram. Meta claims that over one billion Meta Avatars have been made by users so far. And with YPulse research showing that since last year, Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to say they’ve spent time in the metaverse, and creating avatars are the number one thing they do there, so this looks like a good step integrating the metaverse into social media.
