TikTok parent company ByteDance is getting into publishing as #BookTok makes novels go viral (and sell out). The owner of the social media platform just launched a publishing house called 8th Note Press. This move is an attempt for the company to capitalize off the viral hashtag #BookTok, where many users share their favorite novels, usually blowing up authors’ sales (up to 60% according to Publishers Weekly) and causing them to sell out in stores. ByteDance has reportedly been “soliciting authors to publish their books” under 8th Note Press, but approaching them “with less than impressive offers.” An email release from TikTok’s parent company explained that the publishing house will aim to specialize in digital publishing with limited print-on-demand runs, with books being sold on a “digital store” on TikTok.
