Even though Gen Z is turning away from traditional TV shows, their watching habits are still similar. At this year’s VidCon, the event where creators and viewers in the digital video industry gather to discuss current and upcoming trends, the senior media editor at Digiday took part in dialogue with attendants of the conference. He found that most of Gen Z viewers he talked to are watching less traditional TV and more streaming services, including YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok. But here’s the catch: even though they aren’t watching old-school television like previous generations have, the things that they do watch are consumed in the same way that traditional TV is: either “in the background while doing other tasks” or “to kill time.” YPulse research shows that with the addition of more streaming and social video platforms to choose from, the concentration of what services Gen Z watches is more divided than ever.
