Instagram is looking to compete with Twitter with the addition of Threads. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, just released Threads, the new standalone app looking to outpace Twitter. The head of Instagram explained that he saw an opportunity to make a space where users could gather away from the “volatility” and “unpredictability” of Twitter; Meta even describes Threads as the “sanely run” version of Twitter. Even though it is a separate app that must be downloaded, Meta aims to make the transition as easy as possible by allowing users to auto-populate their account information and following list from Instagram. While Instagram is confident in their Twitter replica, the head of the company still admits that “it’d be a mistake to underestimate both Twitter and Elon [Musk].” YPulse research shows that 37% of young people are on Twitter, but 67% use Instagram, so Threads may have a shot at competing by trying to smoothly transition current IG users.
