With the help of artificial intelligence, TikTok is bringing a visual search tool to its Shop tab. The AI tech will allow users to take a picture of any clothing, footwear, etc., and search the platform for the product on TikTok Shop. Although other companies like Bing, Google, and Pinterest already have visual search tools, many people in the U.S. have been slow to take to the tech; but still, the percentage of users using AI visual search is steadily increasing, with a 4.4% uptick since 2020, according to Bizrate data. The CEO of ecommerce agency DigiShopGirl, who has worked with clients testing the Shop tool, explains that although the technology has potential, she “truly think[s] that [visual search] is at least five years away before having a meaningful impact on advertising.” YPulse’s Social Media Monitor report data shows TikTok usage has been on a steady increase over time as other platforms compete for young users’ attention.
