Meta is being fined a record €1.2 billion by the European Union. It’s not the first time Meta is accused of privacy breaches by the EU, and the company has already been heavily fined last year. But the amount of the fine is unprecedented, and comes just when the EU is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its privacy laws known as GDPR, which regulates data protection and privacy in the region. And the battle between the two is so fierce that Meta even threatened to stop Facebook and Instagram from running in Europe—an unlikely threat, don’t worry. (Bloomberg)
