#BookTok’s most popular fantasy romance author is falsely under fire for using AI generated cover art. The U.K. edition of Sarah J. Maas’ fantasy novel, House of Earth and Blood, features a cover illustration apparently generated by AI, which has sparked complaints from artists and book enthusiasts alike. The illustration matches an image marked as AI generated on Adobe Stock, where it was created by a user named Aperture Vintage. While stock image services like Getty Images have prohibited AI generated illustrations, Adobe allows them under specific criteria, including clear labeling and verification of necessary rights for commercial use. The controversy has ultimately led to criticism of Maas and Bloomsbury Publishing, and concerns have been raised about other publishers using AI generated artwork on book covers. Adobe itself launched an AI image generator called Firefly, but questions remain about whether copyrighted work was used to train it. Some artists consider all AI generated art unethical as it can profit from human artists’ stolen work. In fact, YPulse’s new AI Unpacked trend report data shows 66% of young consumers agree: “AI content generators are a danger to writers and artists.” (The Verge)
