The #BookTok community is falling in love with the NHL thanks to steamy hockey-themed romance novels. Within the #BookTok community, one of the largest sub genres is romance, specifically what users have dubbed “spicy” romance which involves NSFW content. Lately, readers of this genre have been obsessed with hockey romances, namely titles like Trying to Score, Pucked, Empty Net, and Taking a Shot. Readers can’t help but fall in love with the fictional male characters described has tall, rugged, and handsome hockey players—which has led them to fangirl over players IRL—and the NHL has taken notice. Back in December, the Seattle Kraken’s TikTok account posted a clip of player Alex Wennberg drinking water with the caption, “what is booktok and why do they like wenny so much?” From there, more players have been added to the fangirl list, including Vince Dunn, Jordan Eberle, and Philipp Grubauer and now new Kraken, and hockey fans in general, are showing up at bars and going to games in support. The team even invited influential #BookToker @kierralewis75 to a game and gifted her a jersey with “BookTok” written on the back, eliciting comments from her followers that they want to buy their own.
