TikTok is igniting a romance novel revolution—and empowering young women’s sexualities. It’s no secret #BookTok has given the publishing industry a major boost, and while romance has been a top genre for decades, “steamy” reads have always been a bit taboo—but Gen Z and Millennial readers are changing that (the genre sold 47M books last year alone). On #BookTok the romance subculture just keeps growing and #EnemiesToLovers (currently at 124.7M views) is one of their top tropes. One Booktoker says of the shift, “TikTok, in particular, really brought the genre to the mainstream and allowed non-romance readers to realize that there is a lot more to the genre than bare-chested men on the covers.” The industry is no longer using the terms “smut” or “fluff” to describe these reads, now they’re focusing on the empowerment of female pleasure instead. YPulse’s Hobbies and Passions report data shows about a quarter of Gen Z females say they regularly spend their free time reading. (Allure)
