TikTok is taking advantage of the fact that the platform is Gen Z’s go-to search engine. Last year, YPulse shared that according to Google’s own data, “Nearly 40% of Gen Z prefers searching on TikTok and Instagram over Google Search and Maps.” Since then, TikTok has grown as a main way young people look for new places to eat, clothes, hacks, and even news. Banking on this, the app just quietly rolled out a new search engine widget for iPhone users. The widget functions as a shortcut to the app’s own search capabilities instead of opening the app and then clicking the search button. Now, when users tap the widget, they’re automatically brought to TikTok’s search screen—which some may find helpful, even if it only saves five seconds max. (TechCrunch)
