Gen Z is ditching Google as their main search engine—they’re looking to TikTok and Instagram instead. According to Google’s own data, “Nearly 40% of Gen Z prefers searching on TikTok and Instagram over Google Search and Maps.” Social media formats, particularly TikTok, are changing the way young people are browsing the internet, and Google is working on keeping up. What they found is that when looking for places to eat lunch, Gen Z is more likely to conduct a search on TikTok or Instagram than they are to look on Google Maps or Search. Google is facing stark competition, but their plans to reach younger audiences include adding unique features like “the ability for a user to pan their camera over an area and ‘instantly glean insights about multiple objects in a wider scene.’” YPulse’s Self-Taught trend report data shows Google and YouTube are still the top places Gen Z and Millennials are searching when they want to learn something new, but as TikTok continues to dominate their screen time, the data may soon be subject to change.
