ESPN is using augmented reality mini games to draw attention to its digital hockey show The Drop. YPulse’s Sports and Athletics report data shows that over half of Gen Z agree with the statement: “When I watch sports I’m often multitasking / doing something else”—and now ESPN is helping them do that while still keeping them engaged with sports content. Verizon and ESPN have teamed up with the National Hockey League to launch two AR mini games for hockey fans to play on their mobile devices, changing the way fans can engage with and experience sports content. Available through ESPN+ as well as its YouTube channel, Twitter, and Facebook pages, fans can witness hosts Arda Öcal and Greg Wyshynski discuss upcoming NHL matches on The Drop. The mini games can be accessed by scanning a QR code or visiting a webpage that then allows users to watch The Drop and game at the same time. Once the game is opened, users can “place a digital version of Öcal into the environment in front of them on their screen and then play two games, Puck Pong and Puck Pursuit, with Öcal as their guide and commentator.” While Puck Pursuit is a single player game, Puck Pong allows players to invite their friends for multi-player abilities.
