YouTube is introducing new rules for videos depicting disordered eating in a bid to tackle “imitable behaviors.” Content depicting eating disorders is already prohibited by the platform’s community guidelines, but starting this week, it will remove “imitable content” and age restrict material relating to eating disorders or self-harm. It will also display a crisis resource panel, directing viewers toward helpful sources when users “enter search strings related to eating disorders.” Creators will still be allowed to share their stories, but they now must do so in a “supportive and non-harmful way.” As video content like this has been on the rise, TikTok is also attempting to direct viewers to helpful resources on the topic.
