The Super Mario Bros. Movie has brought families back to theaters. The Universal Pictures film smashed numerous records in its debut over the Easter holiday and is now on track to join the billion-dollar club at the worldwide box office. During its second weekend alone, the movie hit $87M, “besting Frozen II to score the best sophomore outing of all time for an animated film and the ninth best of any movie.” The Super Mario Bros. Movie is marking a significant moment for family-oriented films, which accounted for only 17% of global ticket sales last year. But this latest film represents the return of “moviegoing urgency in action,” with the hype around nostalgic video games being turned into iconic films. Not to mention Jack Black’s performance as Bowser and his original song “Peaches” going viral and #PeachesSong reaching 73.3M views on TikTok. YPulse’s Media Consumption report shows that a quarter of Millennial parents spent on movie theater tickets in the last month. (NYT, The Hollywood Reporter)
