Meta is opening up its Horizon Worlds virtual reality platform to teens for the first time. Despite objections from lawmakers and other groups saying the VR tech could have possible unintended consequences for young users’ mental health, Meta is forging ahead with opening Horizon Worlds to teens starting at 13-years-old in both the U.S. and Canada. The app is already available to users above the age of 17-years-old and Meta is ensuring there will be “extra features in place to help provide a safer experience on the platform.” For example, teen profiles will be private by default and Meta won’t show a teen’s online status unless they choose to turn that on. By opening up Horizon Worlds to teens, Meta is making the space more of a competitor with other metaverse platforms Gen Z loves. YPulse data shows Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox are young peoples’ top gaming metaverse platforms. (The Verge, CNN)
