Children will eat more fruits and veggies if their families sit down for longer periods of time during meals. YPulse’s Cooking and Diets report data shows that while 89% of Millennial parents agree it’s very important that they eat with their children, 66% also agree that their children are picky eaters. But, according to research from the University of Mannheim published in the journal JAMA Network Open, “children will eat significantly more fruits and vegetables if they stay at the table for only ten minutes longer than usual—30 minutes in total.” When tested in an experiment, kids ate about 100g more fruits and vegetables on average. The study also found that longer family meals “did not lead to the children eating more bread or cold cuts, they also did not eat more dessert.” Researchers concluded that bite-sized pieces of fruits and vegetables were easier to eat and thus more enticing to kids.
