The upcoming Little Mermaid live action film is trending again—this time because of song rewrites. Disney‘s many live-action remakes are working to embrace nostalgia while simultaneously correcting dated or offensive elements from the original films—and sometimes that means changing song lyrics. Disney’s done this before with Aladdin in 2019 when they removed racist lyrics from a key song, and the live-action Dumbo removed the racist crow characters. But now, The Little Mermaid’s live action movie is receiving backlash over changes that some claim are reaching. For instance, “Kiss the Girl,” was updated to make Ariel’s consent more explicit instead of making it seem like Prince Eric was forcing himself onto Ariel and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” has been revised to change “lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn.” Dedicated Disney fans are arguing against the changes, saying the rewrites “assume the worst of the audience.” (Daily Dot)
