President Biden is tapping influencers to boost his standing among young people. While his bid for re-election is not yet official, the president’s digital strategy team is planning to “connect with influencers across the nation to target those who may not follow the White House or Democratic Party on social media — or who have tuned out mainstream media altogether.” Hundreds of unpaid influencers mainly on Gen Z-focused platforms like TikTok and Instagram will work to reach young audiences. In addition to Gen Z, White House says they’re trying to reach more specific voters like “moms who use different platforms to get information and climate activists and people whose main way of getting information is digital.” There’s also talks of building a “dedicated White House briefing space for influencers to meet in person or by remote” which would be the first official messaging center other than the traditional Press Briefing Room. YPulse research shows that the majority of young people trust influencers and social media for accessing the news and Gen Z isn’t afraid to use social media to support the political / social causes they care about.
