Experts are afraid Gen Z workers are missing out on traditional workplace norms. YPulse’s Employment & Career Goals report data shows 17% of Gen Z works at home full-time. While Gen Z workers are thriving in the “new world of work,” some experts are concerned that (for those who work remotely), “entry-level workers are missing out on picking up vital cues that guide behaviour, collaboration and networking.” They argue that navigating office norms taught new employees how to understand a company’s norms, values, and etiquette not only through communication but also through picking up on cues and body language. Remote environments can actually make communications even more difficult for some, and “young employees can find it hard to strike the right balance between appearing either overeager or idle.” While these issues may not affect every new worker, “many of these inexperienced employees, virtual work settings can exacerbate new job stress” and foster anxieties around interactions.
