The buzzword for the family influencer trend is “sharenting”—and experts are warning against it, too.

The buzzword for the family influencer trend is “sharenting”—and experts are warning against it, too. Sarah Adams (@mom.uncharted) started creating TikToks in 2021 that detail the ugly side of family vloggers and has amassed over 9M likes. Her content points out the sad truth that many of these family accounts wouldn’t be successful without exploiting their children in some way, whether it be sharing embarrassing kid moments or posting “funny” pranks that are actually invasive and cruel. And while this isn’t a new concept, the buzzword “‘sharenting’ is a relatively new term to describe parents over-sharing their children’s intimate lives online.” Adams also highlights privacy concerns comparing identifiable kids content to sharing a billboard ad for their child. While family oriented YouTube and TikTok videos documenting their childrens’ lives may be extreme, experts are advising parents to share less on their social medias in general. YPulse’s Millennial Parenting report data shows that 21% of parents (and 36% of Gen Z females) say they follow family bloggers / vloggers on social media. (CBC)
