Teenage girls are experiencing extreme rates of sadness and violence. Recent data from the CDC shows that U.S. “teenagers—especially girls and kids who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning—are ‘engulfed’ in historic rates of anxiety and sadness.” What’s most alarming is that “30% of teen girls said they had seriously considered attempting suicide, up from 19% in 2011” and “18% said they had experienced some form of sexual violence in the past year.” The rate at which they experience such violence has increased by 20% since 2017. While there are various arguments about the root cause (social media, lack of physical interactions, climate change, etc.) it’s clear teens’ mental health needs must be addressed. YPulse’s Mental Health report data shows 59% of Gen Z females agree: “When I wake up in the morning, I have little to look forward to.” (The Atlantic)
