Young people in China are fueling rare waves of protests over the country’s COVID-19 policies. Over the weekend, the country’s highly restrictive “Zero COVID” policy, which is preventing Chinese citizens from living their normal lives and carrying out their work, ignited nationwide civil unrest. Many protests are taking place across college campuses, and young people are posting on social media to give the world an inside look into the demonstrations and government responses to them. The country’s youth unemployment rate is very high, many are unhappy with 996 culture, and lockdowns have exacerbated their problems and their discontent. Despite protests being very rare in Chinese culture (and severely condemned by the Chinese government), the country’s Gen Z and Millennials are a huge part of the unrest.
