Asda’s “Have Your Elf A Merry Christmas” ad brings Buddy the Elf back to life to tap into young Europeans’ nostalgic feelings for the 2000s. It’s the time of year when supermarket brands in the U.K. release their Christmas ads to help Brits get into the holiday spirit, and Asda is a serious contender for the best Christmas ad of the year. In the short video clip, Will Ferrell’s Buddy from the movie Elf is applying for a job as a seasonal worker at one of Asda’s supermarket stores. Needless to say, Buddy creates chaos in the store, from singing loudly to putting up Christmas lights everywhere. No doubt young Brits will appreciate the reference to the 2004 movie, after all, these gens have brought Y2K back. Brands are tapping into the nostalgia trend—like eBay’s recent sadvertising in France. (The Drum)
