A meme describing a fictional country in Western Europe called Listenbourg went viral.

Nov 10 2022

A meme describing a fictional country in Western Europe called Listenbourg went viral. It all started with the French Twitter user @gaspardooo, who decided to take the mick out of Americans’ supposedly poor geography skills by posting a Photoshopped map of Europe with a new fictive country—Listenbourg—with the comment: “I’m sure Americans don’t even know the name of this country.” It was quickly picked up on Twitter, and spread across other social media platforms. The imaginary Listenbourg is attached to the coast of Portugal and Spain, and has now its own flag, national anthem, and even a Ministry of the Interior’s Twitter account. Young consumers love using memes, and data from YPulse’s Pop Culture Redefined Report shows that memes / viral content on social media is the top type of pop culture moment that Gen Z in Western Europe say they pay attention to.
