Tumblr users have mixed reactions to Ryan Reynolds joining the platform—and they’re definitely making it hard for other celebrities and brands to enter the space. As some Twitter users move to new alternative apps like Mastodon (which just reached 1M monthly users), others are returning to more mainstream spaces like Instagram and Tumblr. Ryan Reynolds most recently made the jump, but the platform’s extremely niche and slightly scary culture has the potential to keep other celebs and brands far away. Its userbase is staunchly opposed to brand promotions of any kind and its appeal lies within regular users with deeply absurdist in-app humor that is hard to get right from a marketing perspective. Tumblrites are working hard to shoo away Twitter traffic with one user saying, “We’re here building a fort out of scraps of stuff we found in a dumpster and if Ryan Reynolds would like to sit down in the mud and contribute, he is welcome to. But the fort comes first.” YPulse’s Social Media Monitor report data shows that 7% of Gen Z and Millennials currently use Tumblr—but as more people leave Twitter, we’ll see if that changes.
