Netflix is following through on their plans to crack down on account sharing—and families won’t be happy.

Netflix is following through on their plans to crack down on account sharing—and families won’t be happy. The streaming giant recently announced that they’ll be charging an additional fee for every “extra member” on a family account. This means that unless all users under one account are linked to the same home address, the account owner will be charged an extra fee per person on top of the monthly subscription cost. While the exact price hasn’t been confirmed in the U.S., it may be similar to the test run in Latin American which is a $2.99 fee per member outside of the home. While this is good for business, it will certainly negatively impact college students who use their parents’ account, elderly family members, and even new parents who are strapped for cash and are sharing an account to soothe their baby with CoComelon. Ultimately, this will push subscribers to make hard decisions and may even lure more people to Netflix’s new ad tier which will be $7 a month. YPulse’s TV and Entertainment report data shows that 40% of Millennial parents say that they use someone else’s password for streaming services.
