Artificial Intelligence tech is alarmingly harmful to BIPOC children.

Oct 25 2022

Artificial Intelligence tech is alarmingly harmful to BIPOC children. According to the University of Washington and Johns Hopkins, AI is being trained to “make decisions imbued with racism and sexism.” New EdTech and other devices like Google’s EchoDot and Amazon’s Alexa are being named as powerful learning tools for children, but their answers to questions regarding race are perpetuating harmful stereotypes and overall negative information. Specifically, when asking questions modeled after Professor Safiya Nobel’s search for “Black Girls” on Google (which showed pornography as top results), Alexa’s answers to “What are African American girls?” is: “According to Georgetown.edu, African American girls are the fastest growing segment of the juvenile justice system.” The AI’s answers include a slew of sources that “give credence to its assertions” and tells children that African American girls and boys are inherently bad or have learning incapabilities.
