New research shows TikTok is fueling misinformation and conspiracy theories through their search engine.

Sep 21 2022

New research shows TikTok is fueling misinformation and conspiracy theories through their search engine. According to NewsGuard’s Misinformation Monitor report, “when a TikTok user searches the social media app for information on top news stories, ranging from COVID-19 vaccines to school shootings, nearly 20% of the videos presented as search results contain misinformation.” In comparison, Google proved to have “higher-quality and less-polarizing results, with far less misinformation.” This is raising alarms as recent news shows that young TikTokers are ditching Google and instead opting to use TikTok as their go-to search engine. YPulse research shows social media is Gen Z and Millennials’ top source for wellness—but the research also found that TikTok is consistently feeding young viewers health misinformation that’s potentially very dangerous to their impressionable minds.
