Although TikTok is branded as a social media platform, it isn’t actually social. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, TikTok is a space users flock to when they’re bored or looking for quick entertainment, not really to connect with others and make friends. While connection can happen, it’s not the main purpose of the app—or at least it’s not the main reason Gen Z is using it. Ultimately TikTok is an app that provides “entertainment for one.” YPulse research shows they’re far more likely than Millennials to say that the main reason they visit social media is for entertaining content, which helps explain why they’re fueling the popularity of platforms like TikTok and YouTube that are more focused on entertainment than socializing.
