Speaking of social media being “social,” Gen Z is not “friending” as much on Facebook. According to a Pew Research Center study on teens, technology, and social media, “only about 32 percent of U.S. teens aged 13-17 now regularly use the social network.” YPulse has explored several causes of this decline including competition from TikTok, recent backlash over ethical concerns, and their very public privacy issues. While Gen Z is seemingly done with Facebook, the app has its sights set on the next gen of future teens (Gen Alpha). It’s projected the app could include “social features that teens would enjoy, like more entertainment-based algorithms and more small, private group communication.” Our Social Media Monitor report data shows that about a quarter of Gen Z and Millennials who once used the site have chosen to stop using Facebook.
