Scotland is set to become the first country in the world to provide free period products. The Period Products Bill was introduced in Scotland in November 2020 to address “period poverty,” or the lack of access to period products for low-income individuals. In fact, a 2018 survey found that one in four secondary school- and college-aged young consumers in Scotland struggled to afford period products. With the passing of the new law, local authorities are now required to provide free tampons and sanitary pads to “anyone who needs them.” Gen Z has been pushing to destigmatize menstruation and periods for a while, and the gen has helped to bring conversations around the topic into the mainstream—and into parliament.
