Depop sparked the success of many Gen Z and Millennial designers— but now they’re moving on. Although Depop is a platform young people flock to for thrift finds, it’s also a place young designers were able to sell their hand-made designs. But some brands who launched on Depop are shifting to flaunt their popularity on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and even their own websites. Over the pandemic, Depop emerged as a top social shopping app and popular designers like Shirley Tang have been able to amass thousands of followers. As her designs gained attention from fashion mags and celebs like SZA and Kali Uchis, she decided to branch out and sell her brand ORIENS from her own website. Other brands that started selling on the app have also reached much wider success: Fancì Club’s corsets have been seen on celebs like Olivia Rodrigo, and Gogo Graham’s designs have even been featured on NY Fashion Week runways. While Depop is sad to see popular designers go, they know that their brands inspire more creators to join. YPulse research shows that young people are relying on resale platforms like Depop as a driving force behind their side hustles.
