Millennial hipsters revived the vinyl record—and now nostalgia-obsessed Gen Z is bringing back the cassette tape.

Jul 27 2022

Millennial hipsters revived the vinyl record—and now nostalgia-obsessed Gen Z is bringing back the cassette tape. According to Luminate, cassette sales nearly “doubled from 2020 to 2021, jumping from 173,000 to 343,000. And the trend is continuing in 2022, with year-to-date sales of 215,000.” The cassette recently had a major media moment on Stranger Things, the ‘80s staple was prominently featured in season four and became an iconic accessory tied to the Kate Bush classic. Some of Gen Z and Millennials’ favorite artists, like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Billie Eilish, despite not being born during the cassette era, are jumping on the trend. Although cassettes used to cost roughly $6 to $8, a copy of Harry’s House will now run for $17. Cassettes have the poorest sound quality out of all the music playing tech out there, but maybe that’s the appeal. For young consumers, aesthetics can sometimes trump quality, especially when it comes to nostalgia trends. (Fortune)
