Gen Z and Millennial meme creators are protesting Instagram for wrongfully de-platforming them. YPulse research shows 64% of Gen Z follow meme accounts on social media and meme creators have become an essential part of Instagram’s community, but as the platform continues to prioritize ecommerce and already successful creators and influencers, meme accounts are being tossed aside, with some having their accounts shadowbanned, reported, or deleted altogether for unnecessary reasons. Over the weekend a protest took place outside of Instagram’s NYC headquarters where young meme creators rallied with (of course) memeified signs and posters dragging Mark Zuckerberg through the mud. Protesters are arguing that these accounts contribute to their livelihoods and when their platforms are derailed by penalties and even account deletions, they are left to start from scratch. The Wall Street Journal investigation revealed “Meta applies different content moderation standards to high-profile accounts” and smaller creators are demanding a number of changes to the “harmful and unjust moderation system.” Meme creators “want a comprehensive list of what can or cannot be said on the platform, real-person moderation with nuance over algorithm control…an end to the censorship of political content, and increased support for monetized creators” among a long list of other reforms.
