The movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion is reaching a niche group of young movie fans with a unique take on the genre. Netflix’s version of Persuasion is getting mixed reviews, but the film’s take on the classic novel is giving Jim from The Office a run for his money and is showing yet another new way to modernize Austen’s works. Dakota Johnson gives the main character, Anne Elliot, a stylistic twist by narrating directly to the camera, “giv[ing] one of Austen’s more demure heroines the ‘Fleabag’ treatment.” Young audiences have been proving their love for period dramas through the success of Bridgerton and the re-popularity of 2005’s Pride and Prejudice (which has become an entire aesthetic on TikTok and Pinterest). While this new film may not follow the exact period drama recipe, it shines light on updating classics while keeping 1800s visuals for the “vibe.” YPulse research shows Netflix is young viewers’ favorite video streaming service and the platform’s productions have been known to facilitate mainstream culture with their virality.
