Twitch is launching Guest Star mode where live streamers can pull in guests, talk show style. Anyone with a Twitch account will have the chance to be invited into a livestream via their desktop or mobile device. While the feature will only be available to an invite-only group of users who are already active in the Just Chatting realm— “the booming Twitch category where streamers casually hang out rather than focus on games”—the platform plans to grant access to all users later this year. According to Twitch, “the first five months of 2022 to the first half of 2020, hours watched in the category shot up 151% and Just Chatting creator revenue grew 169%.” In line with creators expanding their outreach, Twitch foresees them using the Guest Star function for various formats including “game shows, advice columns and radio-like sports chat shows.” YPulse research shows Twitch is a youth marketing mainstay and one of Gen Z’s top favorite video streaming platforms. With developments like Guest Star mode, it will be interesting to see how the lines between traditional and social media continue to blend. (TechCrunch)
