Adult animation is having a moment, and could help tempt young audiences back to theaters.YPulse research shows young viewers are driving the popularity of animation, with 31% of Gen Z reporting they watch anime weekly. Many streaming platforms have embraced the craze for anime already—Netflix is planning to launch 40 new anime movies/shows in a number of genres this year alone. While some worry that this could make animation “increasingly standardized for online consumption,” some experts also believe that young audiences are ready to see adult animation on the big screen, which could be a big opportunity for the industry. According to one member of a Cannes panel on the topic, “it’s an extremely rich environment and a major asset for theaters to lure back the public.” (Variety)
