Selena Gomez is developing a half-hour comedy series about Latina teens for Peacock, inspired by John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles.”

Selena Gomez is developing a half-hour comedy series about Latina teens for Peacock, inspired by John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles. Selena Gomez has been one of young people’s favorite celebrities for some time now—and the actress is working with Tanya Saracho and Gabriela Revilla Lugo to develop 15 Candles, a half-hour comedy series on Peacock that’s a “reconfiguration” of John Hughes’ teen rom-com classic Sixteen Candles. The show will follow four young Latinas in high school “as they overcome their feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind” ahead of their quinceañeras. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that the majority of Hispanic young consumers wish they saw more people of their race in TV shows / movies, while several studies have shown that Hispanic representation is still lacking in entertainment content. Gomez’s upcoming show is attempting to reach and connect with Latina teens who haven’t seen themselves and their cultural traditions properly represented in media. (Deadline)
