Queer Black and Latinx students are worried about Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The state recently passed the bill, which blocks school districts from talking about sexual orientation and gender identity with students—and queer Black and Latinx students are especially worried. One Miami-based Afro Latinx 13-year-old student who uses gender neutral pronouns told NBC News they never informed school administrators about being bullied before the bill was passed since the others involved were usually White and wealthy. And according to a 2020 study by GLSEN and the National Black Justice Coalition, more than half of Black LGBTQ+ kids feel unsafe at school. The coalition’s executive director notes that Black LGBTQ+ youth “who already face barriers to feeling safe and supported at schools, those harms will be amplified tenfold.” YPulse’s Causes/Charity & Activism research found that LGBTQ+ discrimination / rights is a social cause that over one-quarter of Black and Hispanic young consumers are passionate about right now.
